10 Tools Every Homeowner Needs in their toolbelt

So you’ve purchased a home. You are probably thinking about the furniture, decor, and appliances you need for your new home, but what about tools? Thousands of tools have been invented for the purpose of making tasks easier and more efficient. However, to get started there are a few tools you should acquire for ASAP. In this blog, we will list the top 10, and why you need them. With each one, I’ve included affiliate links for products I trust.

1) Hammer

Hammers are one of the oldest tools in existence. It is believed, the first hammers were used around 30,000 B.C. Since then, they have evolved considerably and now come in many different weights, materials, and sizes. Hammers have become specialized for certain tasks, but for the everyday tasks you don’t need anything fancy. From hanging a picture to driving in a loose nail, a hammer will be a crucial part of your tool kit.

2) Tape Measure

This tool is a must-have. Want to purchase new window coverings? You may feel confident in your guestimation skills, but a good tape measure will make this task and many more a breeze!

3) Level

You’re ready to hang some picture frames on the wall, putting your hammer and stud finder to good use. However, you better have a handy level! This will help you hang the picture frames perfectly. They come in a variety of lengths, but a 2-foot level should be sufficient for most household tasks.

4) Cordless Drill

A cordless drill is one of the more costly items on this list, but it is a worthy investment. Small tasks like drilling a hole for a drywall anchor, and driving in fasteners on a loose decking board are made easy with this handy tool. Although you can purchase corded versions, if your budget allows, I recommend paying for the flexibility a cordless drill offers.

5) Screwdriver Set

This inexpensive set of tools will be one of your most used. Replacing batteries in remotes, tightening door knobs, and many other home maintenance tasks require a screwdriver. Buying a set with a variety of heads/ sizes will make sure you have what you need.

6) Extension Cord

A critical aspect of a modern home is plenty of receptacles both inside and outside to service your electrical demands. However, even in the most up-to-date homes, there are going to be areas you need a little more flexibility with where to plug in. This is where a medium/heavy-duty extension cord comes into play. Remember, this shouldn’t be used in certain applications. Most importantly, never use an extension cord in your home to power appliances like electric heaters- this is a fire hazard.

7) Stud Finder

This tool isn’t used to find your special someone, but rather to detect components behind the wall covering. When you are hanging heavy loads like shelving, making sure you are fastening to a stud will ensure things won’t come falling off your wall. I recommend adding this inexpensive tool to your arsenal.

8) Flashlight

I know you may have a light on your phone. However, getting a bright handheld flashlight will come in handy when accessing dark areas in your home, or providing visibility in the case of a power outage. I prefer an LED, rechargeable flashlight- not having to go out and constantly purchase batteries is so nice!

9)Adjustable Wrench/ Wrench Set

A wrench will get plenty of use around the home. Tightening a loose toilet or snugging up a table leg will be a breeze with a wrench. You can purchase an adjustable wrench that can be used for a variety of nuts/ bolts, or a set of non-adjustable wrenches of varying sizes. The convenience of having one wrench that does it all is great, but sometimes they tend to slip if you don’t adjust them just right.

10) Ladder

For tasks like replacing a light bulb, or cleaning out the gutters, a ladder is critical There are various ladder types including step ladders and extension ladders. I prefer the flexibility of a multi-position ladder. However, this article will help you decide on the one that is best for your home.
